Obituary for
Melita Poley
Melita Poley (née Hecht) passed away peacefully on February 22, 2023, in Hudson Bay, SK, at the age of 89. Born May 15, 1933, in Middle Lake, SK. Melita is predeceased by her parents Antonia and Henrick Hecht, and her three older siblings Selma (Nelson), Hilda (Blom), and Harry Hecht. She married Otto Poley on March 18, 1954. They lived in Saskatoon for six years, where they had their four children Alice, Robert (Elaine), Betty (Harry), and Donald. She will be missed by all her children as well as her 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Melita and Otto moved their family to a farm just outside the town of Prairie River, SK, in 1960, where they lived in a small 2-bedroom home that had no power or running water for several years. During that time she used a wood stove to cook, bake and heat the house. Melita worked very hard while living on the farm. She always maintained a large garden and canned as much food as she could. Melita raised chickens, ducks, turkeys, and pigs, and milked 10 cows twice a day for many years. She also spun her own wool to knit socks and mittens for her children. After her first husband, Otto, passed away in 1987, Melita married Jack Ruston and moved to Hudson Bay, SK. Jack and Melita enjoyed travelling and going to dances together. After Jack passed away, Melita lived with her son Robert (and Elaine) before eventually moving to Level 4 at the Hudson Bay Health Care Facility in 2012. Melita loved to quilt, cross-stitch and crochet in her free time. While living at Level 4, Melita made many beautiful hats and mittens, and only a few years ago she finished making a unique quilt for every great-grandchild she had at the time.
