Obituary for Mike Kulyk

Mike Kulyk
Mike Kulyk was born August 21, 1931 in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan to parents John and Eva. His dad delivered him on the family farm where he told his siblings he found him in the river while he was fishing.
Mike attended the Amisk School not far from his family farm where he achieved his grade six and continued to gain life skills throughout his life. Mike helped his parents on the farm with the animals and cleared land for more farming until he went to work for his brother Bill logging. He went with his cousin Mike Becjar to Alberta to work and was offered a contract, however his love of home brought him back to Saskatchewan where he continued to work with his brother Bill. The brothers purchased a sawmill and Mike tailed the carriage with the sawyer and learned the trade. The Kulyk Brothers continued to work together sawing all dimensional lumber around the Hudson Bay area and Lake Winnipegosis. He and his brother Bill began clearing land in the Erwood, Crooked River and St. Brieux area. They were also involved with road construction in the area along with building fire-guards when needed. They employed many people over the years and he continued to share these work stories up until the end of his life.
He met the love of his life Marian Currie at a dance and they married October 13, 1962 and started a family. Together they raised 7 children; Darcy, Cheryl, Johnny, Micheal, Phyllis, Billy and Juanita. They purchased the Becjar farm in 1965 and they all worked together on the farm and were cattle and grain farmers. Mike farmed together with his brother Steve for many years. He returned to his love of logging during the winter months and contracted for Sask-Ply, MacMillan and Weyerhaeuser.
Mike loved music and was a self taught guitar and fiddle player. There were many jam sessions held at the Kulyk farm with his friends and family including guitars, fiddles, accordion and spoons. He loved to dance and entertain friends and family. He was an active member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church and belonged to the Lion’s club for a few years. Mike loved his family and instilled his strong family values, work ethic and his love of music to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by all of his loved ones.
Mike was predeceased by his mother and father John and Eva Kulyk; in-laws Elsie Currie and Andrew Currie; sisters Anne Matiesh, Mary Rodas; brother Bill; brothers-in-laws Casey Matiesh, Mike Rodas, Ernie Kuyt, Allen Degraw, Harry Piwish, Peter Renny and Glen Currie; sister-in-law Eileen Piwish; son Darcy; granddaughter Teagan and niece Linda.
