Obituary for Beatrice Alice Dempster (Mayo)

In Loving Memory of (Beatrice) Alice Dempster

March 8, 1920 – May 13, 2014

(Beatrice) Alice Dempster (nee Mayo) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the age of 94 years in the Hudson Bay Health Care Facility - LTC surrounded by her family. Alice will be lovingly remembered by her children Doreen (Warren) Harley, Russell (Valerie) Dempster, Gordon (Iris) Dempster, John (Lynell) Dempster, and Laurel (Blain) Emerson; 17 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and 8 great, great grandchildren; brother-in-law John (Myrtle) Dempster; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by Joseph her loving husband of 68 years; her daughter Eleanor Cairns; her parents Howard and Florence Mayo; her sisters, Molly Plante, Kathleen Lawrence, Dorothy Taylor and brothers Ernest and Jack Mayo; brother-in-law Russell Dempster and sister-in-law Sadie Keeler.
Alice was born on March 8, 1920, on the Mayo family farm southwest of Hazenmore, SK to parents Howard and Florence, the youngest daughter in a family of 6 children. She loved her time on the family farm which gave her a life-long appreciation for gardening, cooking, baking and resulted in her fondness for animals. She grew up in the Pinto Creek district where she attended school. Alice’s love of music started at an early age as part of the family band – her passion was for the piano. She left the family farm for a time after the death of her mother three days before her ninth birthday in March 1929. Alice lived with family friends in Turtleford, SK and then went to live with her eldest sister, Molly’s family, in Grand Forks, BC. She always spoke fondly of her time spent with the Plantes’ in British Columbia. Alice returned to Hazenmore in the mid-1930’s and married Joseph Dempster of Aneroid, SK on October 4, 1938 in the small St. James Church in Hazenmore. They began their married life in the Hazenmore area and later lived for a time in both Kimberley, and Creston, BC, where Alice worked in local restaurants. Returning to Saskatchewan in August, 1951, the family settled in Carragana. Alice looked after the six children, tended a large garden and worked in a local restaurant. She belonged to the United Church Women’s Association and cherished her Anglican faith. As the local Avon representative, she adored a cup of tea and a visit with her friends and clients. Joe and Alice lived in Carragana until they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and then moved to Hudson Bay, SK.
Alice loved every moment she spent with her family and doted on her grandchildren. She had a way for making those in her company feel very special and was always ready with a smile and kind word. She spent many hours on her plants, flower beds and gardens. Alice always had a puzzle on the go, a book to read, a tune ready for the piano, a new pattern in mind for the next crocheted doily, and a knack for playing a hand of cards or a sheet at bingo. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed camping and fishing with her family. She will be dearly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hudson Bay Health Care Facility - LTC for the care and compassion shown to Alice during her 13.5 years in residence.
