Obituary for Alf J. Rasmussen

It is with heavy hearts the family of the late Alf Johannes Rasmussen announce his passing on March 3, 2017 in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, at the age of 92 Years.
Alf was born on November 7, 1924, at Vita, Manitoba, the fourth of nine children born to Ole and Ida Rasmussen who had immigrated to Canada from Norway. He left home at the age of thirteen and moved to the Etomami District where he joined his sister, Helen and her husband Howard Bracken and worked on their farm. On August 22, 1946, he married Evelyn Parkman and in 2016 they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Alf and Evelyn lived in the Etomami district and then moved to the Robert Creek area where they cleared the land, built their home and farmed. Alf also worked in the bush for the Pas Lumber Co., and the Drechsler and the Bradley camps. Their three daughters, Fairy, Reidun and Carol were born in the coming years. In April 1958 they moved to Winnipeg and that fall, were blessed with the addition of Bruce to the family.
In the following years Alf began working as a millwright for McCabe Grain Co., National Grain Co. and, finally, the agricultural products division of Cargill. During this time he obtained his fourth class Power Engineering ticket and Journeyman Millwright certificate. Cargill was opening a new liquid feed supplement for cattle plant in Lethbridge, Alberta, and in 1972 he was transferred to Lethbridge to construct and manage this plant.
Alf took great satisfaction and enjoyment in working with his hands. Nothing pleased him more than spending hours working on various projects, including carpentry and mechanics, and building, inventing and repairing. Following retirement Alf and Evelyn made the decision to come "home" to Hudson Bay in 1990 where many family members welcomed them.
Alf has always had a passion for nature, particularly for camping, hunting and fishing. He fully supported the Wildlife Federations in whatever province he resided. In Hudson Bay he spent six years spear-heading the Saginas Lake and Parr Hill Lake projects, ensuring adequate water for fish habitat for generations to come. There was an impressive sign erected in his honour at Parr Hill Lake by the Hudson Bay Wildlife Federation indicating it is the "Rasmussen Dam". A deterioration in health resulted in him entering the Hudson Bay Long Term Facility in July 2014 where he resided until his passing.
Alf was predeceased by his parents Ole Johannes and Ida Synova (Olson) Rasmussen, his brothers Harold (Alice), Erling (Ludwina), and Lloyd; sisters Helen (Howard) Bracken/(Jim) Brown, Gladys Clarke, Irene (Bernie) Toole and Reidun (Victor) Leeson/(Bill) Kaminski; and granddaughters Carrie Louise Marshall and Jill Nicole Welby;
