Obituary for Rodney Clayton Lanning

Rodney Clayton Lanning
Rodney was born in Saskatoon, SK on September 6, 1945 to Sylva and Ernest Vivian Lanning, he spent his formative years at the family farm in Porcupine Plain, SK. In 1965, Rodney married his high school sweetheart, Lois Bone and soon after directed his gaze skyward and cultivated a love of aviation.
Rodney joined the RCAF in 1967, and in 1969 he received his Wings. On October 22, 1970 the day his son Jarod was born, he became Aircraft Captain of the Douglas DC-3. He flew the Douglas DC-3 for many years, first at Winnipeg, MB and then in Cold Lake, AB. He spent one year at Cape Perry and was lucky enough to make it home for when his second son Ryan was born in 1977.
He moved on to command the C-130 Hercules for 436 squadron in Trenton, ON and 435 squadron in Edmonton, AB and Winnipeg, MB. Rodney was also stationed from '81-'84 in Saskatoon at the CAF Recruiting Centre.
Rodney travelled the globe, visiting more than One Hundred Thirty Countries in his 38 years of active service.
Rodney Lanning served his country valiantly and was a highly decorated officer for his accomplishments in the Gulf War, and the peace keeping efforts in the Balkans. In 2014, Rodney received the Military Service Pin from Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Schofield. He was also heavily involved in Search and Rescue during active and inactive duty, and doubtlessly saved many lives. In retirement he continued his presence in aviation by working extensively with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association and was the Training Officer for many years of the Prince Albert Member Organization.
Through his illustrious career in the military, Rodney still found time to be a loving husband and father of two boys.
Rodney was predeceased by his parents Sylva and E.V. Lanning; parents-in-law Ronald and Mary Bone; and sister-in-law Joyce Bone. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Lois; sons Jarod Lanning and Ryan Lanning; sisters and brothers: Linda (Lloyd) Lisitza, Wayne (Gail) Lanning, Dale (Diane) Lanning, Diane (Rick) Hoffus, and Dean (Maxine) Lanning; brothers and sisters-in-law: Clarence Bone, Maurice (Anita) Bone, and Pat (Frank) Lang; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Lois, Jarod and Ryan wish to extend their gratitude to the extended family and numerous friends from across Canada who all supported them this year, special gratitude to the Nurses and staff of St. Paul’s Hospital and the Sherbrooke Veteran’s Home for all the kindness and care given to him.
