Obituary for Laurine Idabelle Goy (Johnson)

Laurine Idabelle Goy (nee Johnson) was born on Wednesday, May 2, 1928 on a farm near Eyebrow, SK to parents Robert Garfield Johnson and Marion Catherine Johnson (nee Chaplin). At a young age, Laurine came with her parents and siblings to the Neely Lake area. She shared memories of the move from the bald prairies of Eyebrow that was ravished by grasshoppers to the untouched woods of Neely Lake. Her father built a house and cleared the land for the family farm she spoke fondly about. Laurine learned from her parents that a home is to be open to friends, family and the passing stranger who requires a helping hand. Laurine attended school in Neely Lake and enjoyed her time in school where she played 1st base. She sure could hit a ball, but everyone knew she couldn't run!!! Laurine spoke about the cold winters and the journey it took to walk to school with her brothers and sisters and how they wore sealer rings to hold up their socks. Laurine also participated around the family farm and would tell others what hard work it was on the Johnson farm with walking long distances to haul water. After finishing school, Laurine began to work with other families in the area doing housework and helping out with child care. She met Herb during this time, and they enjoyed being involved with the community through social gatherings and dances. Laurine married Herbert Cornelius Goy on August 15, 1949. They were blessed with three children Barry, Carolyn and Terry. Many wonderful memories was formed on their Blighty # 1 district farm. Laurine spoke about how Saturday nights were Grand Ole Opry nights and Herb would dance her around the kitchen. Laurine was also an excellent baker and cook, and always stated that no stove could replace her good old wood stove on the farm.
After Herb's passing in 1975, Laurine moved to Porcupine Plain in the fall and she became involved with the United Church Women's league, being a secretary for the League and becoming a member of the United Church. She helped run many a rummage sale, participate in quilting and gained many life long friendships. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, completing puzzles, discussing current events, playing horse shoes, gardening and watching the Toronto Blue Jays play baseball on tv. Laurine also cherished her time with her grandchildren and she loved to play scrabble and cards with them as she shared stories of her family and friends. She had an incredible vocabulary and could complete crosswords with the best of them. Every Sunday, she would complete a puzzle from the Star magazine. She stated she did not read any of the celebrity gossip, yet she knew all their names!
Laurine is predeceased by her husband Herb Goy, her parents Robert and Marion Johnson. Brothers Bob (Elsie) Johnson, Ken (Joy) Johnson; sisters Mildred (Frank) Wilson, Rose (Glenn) Strand, Elaine Savage and sister in law Audrey Johnson.
Left to cherish Laurine's memory are her children Barry Goy of Porcupine Plain, SK; Carolyn Nerbas (Larry) of Indian Head, SK; and Terry Goy (Darlene) of Weekes, SK. Six grandchildren: Jason Goy of Weekes, SK; Patrick Goy (Megan Stefanyshin) of Prairie River, SK; Jackie Head (Robert) and their children Carson, Sarah and Conner of Yorkton, SK; Kimberley Nerbas Hartley (Craig Hartley) of Calgary, AB; Avery Nerbas of Yorkton, SK and Cheryl Rector (Matthew) of Regina, SK.
