Obituary for Leon Drebit

Leon was born on the family farm north of Stenen on January 26, 1948, to parents John Drebit and Elsie Chalus. He grew up there being spoiled with all kinds of love and attention, having all the latest toys and inventions at his side. Being an only child his best friend was his dog named Presley. Leon started school at Ormside, just a couple miles cross country from the family farm, and completed his high school in Sturgis.
His work history took him to various places across the country-He went out to BC with Uncle Andy and was welding and working in the BC sawmill, but his heart remained in Saskatchewan, so he returned to work hauling gravel and paving with South Construction. Leon started working in the logging industry with Palagians driving truck, and then with Willie Pacsay, where he was trying to manage the operation, while Willie was hurt when there was a near miss with the train, when a logging truck took out the fence at Shirley's family's farm.
Leon tried to put the fence up too early in the spring, and it later fell down-that's when he got the tuning of a lifetime from Shirley.
The first woman to set him straight, and their journey began. They were married on August 7, 1982, 33 short years. They worked and supported each other through sickness and in health to this day and forever after.
Leon worked for a short period at Lorne's Welding, then started with the Town of Hudson Bay for 28 plus years, retiring this past May. Also volunteering with the fire department during his time with the town. He also worked at Hudson Bay Transport and for Dean Hanson in his spare time. He loved to be amongst working people and made many longtime friends in his working careers. He took several courses to update his water and waste water certification. The water treatment plant was his sync. He always wanted everything up to perfect standards. He was very knowledgeable in whatever he chose to do. Receiving the SUMA "Meritorius Award" after 25 years, was a true honour for him.
After his dad passed away suddenly in 1983, he jumped right in and started farming his little homestead where he was born. Spending countless hours there, travelling back and forth, just to check up on things. There was always lots to do.
Shirley always said it was their "Cabin by the Lake", with no lake, but a huge garden, which they grew every year.
He always had time to stop and chat, when neighbours would stop by. His Uncle Tony only lived half a mile down the road and they spent so much time together. Uncle Tony's dog would always sense when Leon drove by, and would come running across the field to greet him. But then Leon would have to load him up and take him back home. He always loved creatures and bonded with his pets, Sawsee and Kitty, and Linda's cats too. They were his family. In the winter when house sitting for George and Jeans, he loved feeding all them beautiful birds.
Leon and Shirley did a fair bit of travelling through the years. Hawaii, California, Mexico, Las Vegas, Yuma, several times, and a relaxing weekend in Moose Jaw (Christmas gift from family).
Life was routine, the TV went on shortly after the alarm clock. Even before the coffee pot. And he always whipped up a mean breakfast for them, before they went to work.
He loved to bbq and cook, (some things), and mess up Shirley's kitchen! He had to have a bread machine and perfected a raisin bread which he gifted to many, especially at Christmas time. But he also liked getting flour from one end of the kitchen to the other!
He loved to bug his in-laws, always calling and checking on them, and having spats over Fords vs Chevys. And those green machines that supported Ducks Unlimited. He spent a lot of time having coffee with all the guys and looked forward to family gatherings. He mingled in carpentry, started many projects, some still on the go. And with many friends help he built the home that he and Shirley shared. He built a few shops, granaries and a barn.
He loved playing cards, especially Kaiser with George and Jean, many times till the wee hours of the morning, and crib with whomever. He loved to skunk Shirley, which didn't happen very often. It was ritual on Boxing Day with Aunt Jenny and Aunt Vonda to play crib. He curled, golfed, bowled and played slow pitch with "The Wildcats". He was a member of the Saskatchewan Wildlife for years and always looked forward to hunting trips with Gordon and Gordon. Last draw Elk season on Dec 13, 2014, he made his "best shot" ever, and tagged his Elk after Shirley pushed bush for him. Didn't bring shame to the family that day! Fishing trips north both winter and summer were enjoyed with family and friends. His cousin Randy, made a lot of trips in the winter to go to Rocky Lake ice fishing. And with Stan Boe he landed his 34 lb. lake trout at Reed Lake, which still graces their home. Stan said he was so excited, he could have walked on the water.
He wanted to prove he could still haul logs, so this past spring he took all the classes, and was in fact able to pull a few loads to the Weyerhauser and Carrot River mills. He kept saying, "Things sure have changed over the years", but he did accomplish that and that did make him very happy.
Leon truly lived a full active life, always willing to help anyone in need. A private man in a sort of a way, but if he allowed you into his heart, you were his friend for life! He could figure things out very quickly and remembered everything. He could be a "Pest" and annoying at times, but he was loved and respected, more than he knew.
He faced many health issues over the years, and rallied through most. But since his last surgery, all he wanted to do was to get back to his farm. After the doctor gave him the green light, George and Shirley prepped all of his equipment. With the help of his good neighbor, Brian Arnie, they combined on a beautiful sunny day, with two machines. Leon took it slow, but done his canola harvest and was SO HAPPY!!! To everyone's shock, he passed away from this life shortly after. GOD BE WITH YOU MY FRIEND!
