Obituary for Bernard Hugh Hayunga

Bernard was born in Winnipeg Manitoba on July 2, 1928 passed away May 5, 2015 in Porcupine Plain Saskatchewan. Bernard is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary (Siwak) his son Duane (Christa Reichle), daughters Diane (Dale Lanning), Lisa (Lyndon Stone), grandchildren Stephen (Tristan) and Justin Hayunga, Clay (Breanne) and Chelsea Lanning, Cody and Ty Stone. Great granddaughter Emmerson Hayunga and Great grandson Cohen Lanning. Sister Hope (Art Wegner), sisters in law Anne Winnicki, Josie Kizlyk, brother in law Jerry (Sharon Siwak) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernard was predeceased by his parents George and Jeanette Hayunga, son Scotty, brother Gene and sister in law Elsie, infant sister Joan, grandson Dustin Stone, mother and father in law Justina and Roman Siwak. Brothers in law John Winnicki, Bill Kizlyk, Mike Siwak and sister in law Eileen Siwak.
Bernard was raised on the family homestead in the High Tor district. After he completed grade eight Bernard farmed with his Dad and then on his own until 1985. Bernard and Mary raised their family on the same farm where he grew up. In 1985 Bernard and Mary moved the farm house into Porcupine Plain where he lived until April of 2014. Bernard resided at the Red Deer Nursing home from May of 2014 until his passing.
In 1986 Bernard began working for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance as a crop adjuster, and continued doing so for seven years.
He was appointed as the town of Porcupine Plain weed inspector until December of 2008.
Bernard volunteered on many Boards as well as local politics. At 14 years old he was the Secretary of the High Tor boys Athletic Club, Member of the High Tor Community Club, Member and Chairman of the High Tor Cemetery Board, Charter board member of the Red Deer Nursing Home where he served for 18 years, board member at Green Hills Golf Course, appointed to the North East warble control committee and served as chairman. Appointed to provincial warble committee representing north east region. Served on local wheat pool committee, Porcupine Museum Board, member of National Farmers Union.
Bernard served for 25 Years on Rural Municipal council, 16 years as councillor for division 4 and 9 years as Reeve. Bernard served 6 years as alderman for town of Porcupine Plain. He enjoyed local government finances, serving on budget committee for all 31 years he served in local government. Bernard was proud of the fact he did not miss a regular or special meeting during an 18 year 3 month period.
Bernard liked to have friends and family around and hosted many parties at the house or when they had their camper at the lake. Over the years when milestone birthdays or anniversaries came along he was sure to have all friends and family at his home.
Bernard was very proud of his grand children and enjoyed spending time with them, sharing with them his stories, talking about the cars they drove and Nellie who lived in the attic.
