Obituary for Peter Hoiland

Peder (Peter) Hoiland was born near Brock, SK in the family farm house on Feb. 21, 1917 to Norwegian immigrants Johannes & Martine Hoyland.
Peter completed grade 9 at McCarthy School near Brock. At the age of 16, Peter went to work for a local farmer where he remained for 8 years, driving a 12 horse team they used for farming.
Peter then rode the rails to Ontario. He worked in tobacco fields, Campbells Soup, first as a labourer then as bookkeeper and various other jobs.
Peter returned to Saskatchewan and started a gravel hauling business, beginning by loading gravel by hand and later using a loader and a gravel screening plant that they built.
Peter then started Hoiland Transfer, a transport business based out of Rosetown mostly hauling furniture for people moving from Manitoba, Sask, Alberta, and BC.
In 1946, Peter and his brother Ted traded the truck with vans for pulp trucks and hauled north of PA.
In 1950, Peter started clearing land and brush, cutting all over Saskatchewan. He worked extensively at this as well as a couple winters logging near Baden, Man, then back to clearing and breaking land in the Porcupine area. Peter loved this type of work.
Peter met and married Caroline Tallman, a psychiatric nurse in 1954. At that time she was working as a general nurse and Peter came in for a hernia operation. They had 3 children: Ronald, Curtis and Marlene.
Peter loved moving around but settled down to farm north of Porcupine in 1960. He loved seeing heavy equipment working and land clearing, seeing the crops growing, and liked horses and animals, and enjoyed most types of music.
He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, and joined the local farmer’s hockey team at the age of 50. But he especially enjoyed being with people and visiting. In 1961, Peter started driving a school bus for 8 years. He was on the school board, church board, and was involved in helping with local horse events.
Peter spent many hours helping to build the Porcupine Arena and the Lutheran Church.
Peter was predeceased by his parents Johannes & Martine, brothers: Johan (John), Torval (Ted), Anton (Tony) and wife Vera, sisters: Peggy (George) Duguid and Myrtle (Don) Francis.
He is survived by his wife Caroline, brother Olaf (Scottie) and wife Eva, sister Alma, sister-in-law Shirley, sons: Ronald (Lily) and Curtis (Pamela), daughter Marlene, grandchildren: Deanna (Eric) Bloomquist, Darcy (Erin), Christopher (Richelle), Jason, Haley, Jade, and Connor, great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Michael, Ethan, and Caleb Bloomquist, Bryn, Jillian, Sarah, and Tayte, and Hayden and Rylen, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Philippians 3 : 13-14

“Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus is calling us up to Heaven.”

- God’s ultimate plan is to give us eternal life with him in heaven, where pain, sorrow and suffering are gone forever.
