In 1939 Ethel married Clifford Graham and moved to Chelan where they had three children, Reginald, Marjorie and Evelyn. They moved to Sheridan, Manitoba where Cliff worked in the mines and was killed in an accident May 24, 1949. Ethel returned to Chelan with her children and met Gordon Smith.
