The Long Walk

Long I walk, away from home
My Spirit longs my heart to roam
Corners turned and bridges crossed
So much gained and too much lost

Each step I take, each mile I go
blends winters wrath with summers glow
Work and worry, laugh and play
The seasons turn, I cannot stay

So much to do, so much to see
Maggie, won’t you come with me?
My strides were strong and my step was fast
but shorter now than in the past.

I’ve walked so far now, I cannot see
That place I held so dear to me.
I think that I should turn around
I’ll make those lost things something found.

I’m headed home now, I’m going back
Toward home I carry this burdened pack
Each day shorter and miles longer
As a younger man, my legs were stronger.

Now the Autumn frost is in the air
Years of Silver paint my hair
I’m tired now, I can’t go on
This night is cold and its hours till dawn.

So lay me down to rest a while
for from St. Andrew’s, Just a mile
I see a porch light brightly burn
familiar voices rise in turn.

In this sweet grass, upon this crest
with golden wheat fields East and West
Here, forever I shall abide
Mother and Father by my side.

If you should visit in the spring
When the breeze is gentle and crickets sing
The four stars bright in the Western Sky
Stand tribute to our long goodbye.
