Obituary for Sophie Palaniuk (Gulka)

Sophie was born at Buchanan, SK, on October 8, 1930 to Francis and Steve Gulka. She was one of five children.
As a young adult Sophie worked at Gilmore's store in Preeceville, Sohpie often commented on what a wonderful employer he was.
On October 22, 1949, she married John Palaniuk, together they had three children; two sons Dean and Curtis and an infant daughter that passed away at birth.
Their first home was at Lady Lake, SK, which consisted of two bunkhouses joined together and shared with a family of skunks underneath.
In 1965 they moved to Hudson Bay where John and Sophie started the Palaniuk Logging Company. A very important part of the company started at 5 A.M. every morning with a game of crib.
They also enjoyed fishing and looking for arrowheads. John and Sophie had an ongoing competition to see who would find the first one, the best one and the most. Through the years John learned to hide some in his pockets... Sophie hated to loose...
Sophie also loved to bake and cook; perogies, cabbage rolls and delicious baking goods were often enjoyed by her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, teaching them her favourite receipts. It was a challenge though... with Sophie a pinch of this and a sprinkle of that, and just a little of this... they also loved to learn how to paint the gorgeous Ukrainian eggs. Sophie also crocheted table cloths, quilted blankets and baked for Farmers Markets and played Bingo. Sophie loved Bingo so much that she got a driver's license so she could drive herself and wouldn't have to miss, on days when John came home late.
Sophie loved Christmas, she loved Christmas lights and had her house decorated for many years and even won awards for the best lights. Every Christmas Eve Sophie prepared the true traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve dishes for supper; for her family to enjoy. And they did enjoy!
Sophie loved to garden, flowers and vegetables, many hours were spent in her yard, which flourished under her caring hand.
Her nemeses (cats and squirrels), many cats received a thump from her broom as she protected her precious flowers.
Sophie was predeceased by her Parents; Sister's Pauline and Caroline; Brother Eddie; Infant daughter; Granddaughter Jaylen, and Husband John.
She is survived by her sons: Dean (Pat), and Curtis (Carla), grandchildren: Travis (Tanya), Carrie-Lyn, Johnal, and Shelen, step-grandchildren: Anna-Mae, Jerred, Tami, and Treven, great-grandchildren Brody and Jace, step-grandchildren: Berlin, Rowan, Bennatt, Izack, Jordan, Austan, Morgan, Darian, Brandt, and Marek, and by her nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
