Obituary for Lorne Edward Banks

Lorne was born to Clifford & Melva Banks in Lockwood Saskatchewan on November 25, 1926. In 1932 the family moved north to the Carragana area.
Lorne worked with his father on the family farm until 1944 when he purchased the half section of land that is still part off the family farm today. In 1951 he married Winnie Hassard and they raised three children Bruce, Bonnie & Brian.
15 years ago mutual friends introduced Lorne to Juanita Korytko They became very good friends and frequented senior dances throughout North Eastern Saskatchewan. Wonnie and her family ensured Lorne was never left alone during holidays and included him with their family functions. Bruce, Bonnie and Brian would like to thank the Korytko family for their kindness.
Lorne's contribution to the community includes 23 years & 7 months as Councillor of the RM of Porcupine from 1963 - 1970 and 1983-1998. Lorne also served as Director with the Porcupine Opportunity Program from 1987 - 2001. Lorne was also part of the crew that built the first curling rink in Carragana.
Although Lorne spend a considerable amount of time away from the family farm earning off the farm income his passion was always the farm. Before deciding to rent the land in 1996 he had seeded 52 crops. He believed in the land and wanted to ensure his family was raised on the farm and could experience the rural way of life. Some of the off the farm activities included working on seismic crews in the Artic during winter months, working with logging crews in Alberta and Saskatchewan. For a one 10 year stretch he also contracted with Canada Post to deliver mail daily from Tisdale to Hudson Bay.
Lorne's skills were in the area of mechanics. At the age of 12 he built his first arc welder. On the family seed farm he designed one of the first elevators to transfer grain from wagons into holding bins.
Lorne was predeceased by his wife Winnie is 1996. His brother Lloyd in June 2014, his parents Clifford & Melva Banks, in-laws Shirley Carswell, Ethel & Bill Gulka and father and mother in-law Clarence and Lilly Hassard.
Lorne is survived by his brother Keith (Bonnie) Banks, his sister-in-law Lorraine Banks and brothers-in-law Bill (Lou) Hassard and Doug Carswell. As well as his three children Bruce (Barb), Bonnie and Brian (Barb), 5 grandchildren Cory, Tracy, Ryan, Ashley & Bobbi-Lynn, and 9 great grandchildren plus numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
