Obituary for
Elgin Bracken
Elgin was born in Vita, Manitoba and moved to the Etomami district at a very young age. He attended Moose Haven, a one room school house, and later finished high school in Hudson Bay. Elgin's school years were busy with milking cows, putting up hay & growing grain on the family farm.
In 1960, Elgin married Karen Menard and began living on the Bracken farm south of Hudson Bay. Elgin spent the majority of his working career at Wizewood MacMillan Bloedel where he committed 33 years mostly as a Senior Production Supervisor. He retired in 1995 but worked another 5 years as a relief Supervisor for SaskFor and Weyerhaeuser. Elgin was very respected by the many men & women that worked for him at the mill.
Elgin led a simple life and valued hard work. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends & neighbours. Much of Elgin's life was focused around horses, hunting, and family....with horses being his passion. For over 50 years Elgin had a tremendous impact and contribution to the horse industry mainly in North East Saskatchewan. Many of his horses were bought for young riders who had great success in 4-H and at horse shows across the province. Elgin was a horse show judge, coach, mentor, breeder, competitor, fan and promoter. Elgin was also an avid hunter and guide. He is proud of the many trophy big game he took and loved the camaraderie of hunting and the enjoyment of the great outdoors. Elgin enjoyed the time spent with family, especially watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up.
